Poem for the Tin-tun-teros
by Brenda Cárdenas

This for the timbaleros, percussionists, tin-tun-teros,
those who tap with spoons on their stoves
with pencils on their desks
with nails and knuckles on tables, beds, their own heads
with fists against walls
and fingers on the spines and curves of their lovers, dancers.

This for the congueros, drummers, bongoseros,
those who never rest
with their staccato heels always hammering the skin of the floor
stomping in their dreams filled with maracas, güiros and claves,
these dancers with steps so smooth
and hips that move like their high hats and snares.

This for the timbaleros, percussionists, tin-tun-teros.
They are bad asses with their cymbal storms
their games of sticks that fly like wings. How scampish
their tricks that won’t let us work or sleep
only dance and sing, sing and dance
and sometimes move the earth a little.

Rock Your Rack 2016 Ad

October 1 – October 16, 2016

Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women. 1 in 8 women, and an ever-increasing percentage of men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes. There is currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival.

Models Giving Back is pleased to present Rock Your Rack, an annual fundraising event combining the best of SL Music, Art and Fashion to support the work of breast cancer charities and raise awareness for early detection which is critical to a positive outcome for this devastating disease.

This year’s event will support the National Breast Cancer Foundation which provides free mammograms, education, support and early detection services to anyone in need.

The 2016 event involves 63 designers including Gold Sponsors: AlaFolie, Athena Couture, Dulce Secrets, Emerald Couture, Empyrean Forge, LaVian & Co, Phedora, Prism and Kultivate Magazine. In addition, this year’s event will feature 2D and 3D artists for the first time with an Art show sponsored by Kultivate Magazine. Add to that the 4 Tribute concerts, 12 DJ Dance Parties, 7 Live Music Artist Shows, 9 Fashion Shows, the 10L Hunt, Silent Auctions, Art Auction and you have one must-visit event.

Designers will be providing exclusive creations with 100% of the sales of those items going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, along with a fine selection of the newest and most popular designs donating a percentage as well.

For a complete listing of events and more details on this year’s event, please visit the website: http://rockyourrack.wordpress.com

This year’s event officially opens to the public on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 12:00 am SLT and will close at 11:59 pm SLT on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

Together we can make a difference!

About Models Giving Back

Models Giving Back is an agency of professional, certified Second Life models who give of their time and talents to raise funds for legitimate and verified SL and RL charities.

Models Giving Back was founded in October of 2012 by Jamee Sandalwood after a previous agency dedicated to charity work was forced to close due to the owner leaving Second Life. Jamee felt the work that was being done needed to be continued and set out to lead the models that were already a part of the former agency into new and bigger endeavors at the newly created Models Giving Back.

To date the agency has partnered with dozens of designers and provided models for runway, print and other functions that support charities around SL.

Rock Your Rack is the creation of Jamee Sandalwood and is owned exclusively by Models Giving Back in Second Life.

About the National Breast Cancer Foundation

The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 34.  At the time of her diagnosis, there was little information about the disease, and she was forced to make a decision about her health with few options. After her treatment, Janelle made a commitment to help women around the world by educating them about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. NBCF’s mission is to save lives through early detection and to provide mammograms for those in need. This mission includes increasing awareness through education, providing diagnostic breast care services for those in need, and providing nurturing support services.

The Peace of Wild Things
By Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

I had the honor and pleasure of choreographing two of the songs in this amazing and beautiful production by Subversive Vavoom aka Lindy Hopper.  It was created as a celebration of her 10 years in Second Life. May her next 10 years be as magical as this!

Her Name Is Alice by Shinedown

I invite you to a world where there is no such thing as time
And every creature lends themselves to change your state of mind
And the girl that chased the rabbit, drank the wine, and took the pill
Has locked herself in limbo to see how it truly feels

To stand outside your virtue
No one can ever hurt you
Or so they say

Her name is Alice (Alice)
She crawls into the window
Through shapes and shadows
Alice (Alice)
And even though she’s dreaming, she knows

Sometimes the curiosity can kill the soul but leave the pain
And every ounce of innocence is left inside her brain
And through the looking glass we see she’s painfully returned
But now off with her head I fear is everyone’s concern

You see there’s no real ending
It’s only the beginning
Come out and play

Her name is Alice (Alice)
She crawls into the window
Through shapes and shadows
Alice (Alice)
And even though she’s dreaming
She’s unlocked the meaning for you

This kingdom
Good riddance
Her freedom
And innocence
Has brought this whole thing down

Her name is Alice (Alice)
She crawls into the window
Through shapes and shadows
Alice (Alice)
And even though she’s dreaming
She’s unlocked the meaning

She’s unlocked the meaning for you

POSES: Manifeste

Here rise to life again, dead poetry!
Let it, O holy Muses, for I am yours,
And here Calliope, strike a higher key,
Accompanying my song with that sweet air
which made the wretched Magpies feel a blow
that turned all hope of pardon to despair.
-Dante, Purgatorio, Canto I

This photo is my entry to the Razmataz Contest, which asks us to rename the pose chosen for the photo. I decided to call this pose “Soul Education”, because the body language expressed reminds me of the chorus in the song of the same name, by Jamiroquai. The casual, breezy, outfit by !gO! was perfect for this. Now, I need to go listen to the song . . .

I’ve got my soul education
You know its stitched into the clothes that I wear
Got my life information
Upon the breezes flowing through my hair
Got a pocket full of rainbows
Oh and a sky to put them in, so blue
So let the music come save you.
I found a God that I can pray to
Deep inside my soul.
– From Soul Education, by Jamiroquai

Le Cirque de Nuit at Idle Rogue, home of Guerilla Burlesque

Le Cirque de Nuit at Idle Rogue, home of Guerilla Burlesque

I had the pleasure of attending the opening night show of this season’s Le Cirque de Nuit on the Idle Rogue sim, home of Guerilla Burlesque. Having seen last year’s show, I knew I was in for another treat this year. With much anticipation, I turned the lights down, put on my headphones, turned up the music, and completely immersed myself in this beautiful, unforgettable feast for the eyes and ears. I laughed, I cried, I was transported to another world and escaped mundane existence for a little while.

This year’s Cirque also had much personal meaning for me, and was made extra-special with a Cirque debut performance by my good friend, Lindy Hopper aka Subversive Vavoom. Having performed in both RL and SL, I am privileged to know all about the blood, sweat, tears and excitement that goes into a show. I’m so thrilled for her and everyone involved!  You can see more pictures in my Guerilla Burlesque album on Flickr.

Thank you to everyone that had a part in putting on this show. Once again, I rejoiced in the uniquely intimate and special human experiences that Second Life allows us to share with each other every single day.

Don’t miss this event if you can help it!  There are two more shows this weekend. Tonight, Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 7pm SLT and tomorrow, Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 7pm SLT. More info on the Idle Rogue blog.

Dax Dover wearing Venus by !gO!

Model and Photographer: Dax Dover, March 2015

DRESS: !gO! – Venus, Cherry
HAIR: Analog Dog – one trick pony, black
SKIN: Silken Moon – Eclipse Luna, Bisque
SLINK hands and feet

The Roman goddess, Venus, was also known to the Greeks by the name of Aphrodite. She was the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and pleasure, and the month of April was sacred to her. I feel the poem below is not only beautiful, but powerful.

Aphrodite Poem
by Agapi Stassinopoulos

So tell me about your beauty, your irresistible attraction.

All women are born beautiful.
Knowing that, however, is their choice!
All women are born deserving love.
Choosing that is up to them.
I have no bonds or boundaries;
I love whom I choose and when I want.
I’m free in my love; I am in bliss.
In my senses I rejoice.
You do not choose me-
you’re afraid of my freedom-
you judge me.
You pollute me with your thoughts, your shame and your guilt.
I’m moved to ecstasy when I love;
when I mate I become one.
I know how.
Everything that breathes and is alive comes under my domain:
doves, dolphins, swans,
roses, irises, lilies.
All pleasures and sensuous delights.
perfumes and oils,
lustrous fabrics, foods and drinks.
Music thrills my soul:
the lyre, the harp, the soft sounds make love to me.
The waves of the sea-
oh, yes, there you’ll see me
in the ocean,
in the sunsets,
all the exquisite beauty between birth and death,
when day meets the night.
Why do you fear death?
I die every time I mate. I am in ecstasy.
I give myself over and over and over again
to the glory that is love in the moment.
I have no fear of losing myself.
Oh, there is the secret:
to give oneself and keep oneself intact.
That is my bliss, my mortal, divine bliss.
I know who I am.
I smile. Can you see
My secret smile?
To whom do I belong?
I belong to me.

I lovingly dedicate this site to the abundant goodness that is embodied for me in the form of Venus-Aphrodite.  So say we all.
